ABOUT SCHOOL PROTECTION DOGS

The SPD Team is here to answer your questions:

How does this work?

How does this work?

All training for each Dog is handled by us. Prior to being placed in service we will familiarize the dog with the staff member(s) who will be handling the dog and introduce them into regular patrols of the buildings and grounds. Once we establish who is going to work the dog daily we work with them to familiarize them with commands, do’s and don’ts and how the dog signals upon finding drugs or weapons. Once the custodial caretaker is established the dog is placed full time in the care and direction of the school. The school owns them. As long as the dog is adhered to a routine regiment and kept obedient, there is very little need for ongoing training.

What about Allergies?

What about Allergies?

Schools deal with children with peanut or other food allergies regularly. We insure that these students are protected from naturally occurring things in our environment that could be harmful to them. In the kitchen these elements that could be harmful to them are in abundance, yet measures are taken to shield them from exposure.  Likewise, there is never a time that a child with an allergy is made to stay in the same room that the dog occupies. In a search the dog is not going to be stopped in proximity to the student unless in a passing search the dog alerts on this student.

Couldn’t a gunman just shoot the dog?

Couldn’t a gunman just shoot the dog?

Yes, a I militarily trained marksman could well fire on and disable the dog, however these dogs are very fast, and average 70 lbs. They are a very challenging target at 30 mph.

What happens in a hostage situation?

What happens in a hostage situation?

These dogs are run through drills and scenarios repetitiously. The Dog is handled by a school employee and on leash at all times. If there is any question about whether the dog will be confused on who to attack, the handler simply would not deploy the dog. When the situation is clear from the potential of another being bit, then the handler then deploys the dog.

We just don’t have a budget for a dog? Is there help available?

We just don’t have a budget for a dog? Is there help available?

Yes- It’s Grass Roots help. Currently there is an effort underway in a local community to raise the money privately to fund the purchase of a dog. Local businesses are being solicited to donate along with efforts locally to raise money through student organized car washes and raffles. All these efforts only require concerned students and parents to become active and garner the local support. This can be accomplished through school newsletters, facebook pages, and other social media.
